Client Situations

A prospective client approaches you to begin personal training. She is a diabetic and has come to your after her doctor suggested she start exercising. She is intimidated by her doctor and was afraid to ask him about the specific details of how and when she should exercise. Describe some of the particular guidelines she should consider when beginning to exercise so she can approach her doctor for more imformation.

1. Due to increased energy utilization her insulin dose may need to be adjusted as she begins to exercise. 2. Give her a list of potentially steady-state exercises (walking, cycling) so she can get approval for a variety of exercises. 3. Have the doctor review when and where insulin injections should be administered to avoid injecting insulin at the wrong time in the wrong place. 4. Have the doctor suggest an energy source (amount and frequency) to take during exercise. 5. Have her discuss pre-exercise eating with her doctor 6. Have the doctor review methods for monitoring her blood sugar levels on her own, and the possible need to monitor herself more frequently.
